Been wanting to visit Samal Island for the longest time. Discovery Samal was said to be one of the best if not the best resorts in the island. The resort itself from the ameneties, architecture, cleanliness and the actual beach was top notch. Would definitely say that this is one of the most gorgeous resorts we've stayed in. Service though unfortunately, was the opposite of 5 stars. Sharing below a few pointers: Samal Welcome Center - good place, helpful staff. did pre check in procedures there. Departure time though was not acurate. Despite the schedule stating that the departure was at 11 am, we left almost 12 pm. Check in - Most chaotic part of the trip. After receiving welcome drinks, there is no order on how to proceed with check in. Guests were all over the front desk not knowing how or where to queue. Took a while for staff to notice that there are guests waiting. Arrived at around 12 am and was told that room wasn't available. This was ok since check in time was at 3 pm. Was informed that we would be receiving a call once room is ready. Up until 3pm, no calls were received. Visited the front desk multiple times from 12 pm - 3 pm but it's as if they were meeting us for the first time. Did not help as well that there were no staff available during check in time. During actual check in, the only thing that was mentioned by the front desk is to wait for our room cards. There was no info on how to go around the hotel, breakfast details, wifi access, how to go to rooms etc. Had to consult with other staff members to secure all details. Front desk needs serious retraining. Despite that, everyone was very friendly. Room (Junior Suite) - very good and complete. beautiful interiors and above average finishing. bed was a perfect 10 for us. room service on the other hand was not the best. Requested for water and ice, despite multiple follow ups came 1 hour later. Food - good for resort food. Drinks - 2nd most chaotic part of the trip. There was a happy hour at 4 - 6 pm but was informed by waiters that there was only 1 bartender serving the entire resort. People were getting very furious with the wait. Complaints from people filled the beach area. After 1 hr and 20 minutes of waiting, drinks arrived for us. Waiter was very nice to explain what happened. Operations need huge improvements as waiters unfortunately get all the complaints of customers. This somewhat ruined the mood of "sunset and cocktails" cause drinks arrived during the evening already. Quality of drinks though was above average. Getting around - not the best but far from the worst. Wait time was manageable. Staff were very friendly and responsive to requests. Breakfast Buffet - Above average dishes. Not chaotic at all. Order was in place. The only hard part was getting water from waiters. Would be helpful if restaurant decides to just leave a water dispenser. Check out and transfers - fast and efficient. done in 15 mins. transfers back to davao city was flawless. Overall a decent stay but honestly leaves much to be desired. I want to love it but just can't, yet. Good hospitality is more than friendly and smiling faces. There is definitely a huge potential for actual 5 star status (apart from amenities).
We really enjoyed our stay in Discovery Samal. Ive been to resorts around the world, and I would say that this resort is top-notch! The service is world class! I love the way they greet people, the hand gesture. Every employee is very friendly, helpful and accomodating. I remembered some names who was truly helpful during our stay, Sir Jeth was always making sure we are enjoying our stay, Jumier and King from conceirge/bellman. John mark who gave us a tour around the resort, and sir Jun the driver. Sheilahme was probably our favorite who would offer to take our many pictures, thanks to her we got so many nice pictures. Maam Ruby in the restaurant was very accomodating, and making sure we are enjoying our meals. Dafney from the frontdesk played a very important role in surprising my friend with amenities in our room for her birthday. Kuya Jeorge from the boat who offered us picture taking as well. And kuya Wingard who offered us ride to our next hotel after checking out. The food in the breakfast buffet on our first day was so awesome! Love the danggit, ube champorado and so happy that the lattes are included in the buffet. The breakfast buffet on our 2nd at the bistro day was only limited and has few selection. Our stay here is truly unforgettable and we’ll definitely come back! The only negative feedback i have is that when we checked in our room there was still a leftover food left in the fridge from the previous guest. And there was a underwear sticker on the bathroom wall, so if the housekeeper cleaned the bathroom well they would definitely see that sticker. But still we enjoyed our stay! Discovery Samal will be on top of our vacay list!

“Great Service!”
Great customer service! All staff are very friendly. Starting from the airport pick-up, to their welcome center before riding their exclusive boat, front desk, transport service inside the resort, servers in their restaurants, to housekeeping. If you made eye contact with their staff, they will smile and make subtle bow gestures. At first, I had a concern with checking in. I arrived early, and the front desk told me that they would just call me if they had available room before 3:00 PM which is their normal check-in time. They told me that I could roam around while waiting, but I decided to look for a couch because I hadn’t slept yet. I woke up around 2PM but I was still waiting for their call. I went to the front desk and noticed that the crowded area had emptied. And I was the only one (with my wife) left. There was also just one luggage left, which was mine. The result was that I slept on a couch instead of in a comfortable bed. I was given the last room, which was not the best because they gave it to others even though we were earlier than other customers. They were also not willing to grant our late check-out request when we asked it on the last day. Another concern was that we had a hair in our food, and there was a small insect that came out from the juice dispenser. Why am I still giving 5 stars? Because I received an apology letter and 6 desserts when I returned to my room. They apologized and offered to replace the food and gave us free fruits. They replaced my glass of juice right away. And they eventually allowed us to check out late. That is customer service! They have their own port and exclusive boat. They also gave us another free transfer from the port to the airport. Every move of the staff, they will greet you. The place is well maintained. There is just one light that is not working in my room but could be just an isolated issue. My wife said that she was well pampered.
